As a result, members of Generation Y developed more independent attitudes toward religion. Indeed, record numbers of millennials ran for office that year, citing dissatisfaction with the administration of Pres. Although the oldest millennials were eligible to run for Congress starting in 2006, only five millennials had seats in the house in 2017. Moreover, no millennials sat in the Senate until 2021, when Democrat Jon Ossoff of Georgia defeated incumbent Republican David Perdue in the closely watched Georgia runoff.

The long-term effects of this “slow start” for Millennials will be a factor in American society for decades. For decades, Pew Research Center has been committed to measuring public attitudes on key issues and documenting differences in those attitudes across demographic groups. One lens often employed by researchers at the Center to understand these differences is that of generation. The birth range of Generation Y is a matter of debate, but roughly considered Birth range is somewhere between early 1980s and mid 1990s till early 1996.

The rise in educational attainment has been especially sharp for young women. More millennial women than men possess bachelor’s degrees or higher, a trend that Gen X women started when, in 2001, they became the first generation to surpass men in educational attainment. Elsewhere around the world, education levels have dramatically increased. Between 1999 and 2006 the number of young people studying in postsecondary education in China more than tripled. In 2010 about 11 percent of the population had attended university, compared with 2.4 percent in 1970. Generation Y are a group of people born during the ’80s and the early ’90s.

Even so, this early look provides some compelling clues about how Gen Z will help shape the future political landscape. Both terms are used interchangeably throughout the demographic group between early the 1980s to mid-1990s(1994-6). Gen Y are also called Millennials because they became adults around the time of the millennium. According to the most recent set of labour market statistics, just over 71% of 16 to 34-year-olds are in employment, 5.7% are unemployed and 24.7% are economically inactive – many of them students or carers. Only about 6% of 16 to 34-year-olds in Scotland have no qualifications at all; the figure for those aged 35 to 64 is more than double that, and for those over 65 it doubles again to more than a third. However those over-65s are much more likely to have other, non-academic qualifications.

Generations provide the opportunity to look at Americans both by their place in the life cycle – whether a young adult, a middle-aged parent or a retiree – and by their membership in a cohort of individuals who were born at a similar time. Millennials is the term mostly used to describe Generation Y or Gen y, are the democratic cohort following Generation X and preceding Gen Z, born between early 1981-mid 1990 to 1996.

Millennials are also concerned about social justice and will not support institutions that they see as in conflict with social and economic equality. As such, Millennials are exerting their influence on the world around them, as all prior generations have done. In addition, it seems that this generation definition of generation y may be having less sex that any other generation before it. In a survey of more than 26,000 American adults, about 15 percent of Millennials between 20 and 24 reported having no sexual partners since the age of 18. Only 6 percent of GenXers (people born in the 1960s) could claim the same.

Mark Zuckerberg, perhaps one of the most famous millennials, grew Facebook from a college directory into a powerful and influential social networking website over the course of 10 years. Other millennial innovators include Instagram founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger and TikTok developer Zhang Yiming. Millennial, term used to describe a person born between 1981 and 1996, though different sources can vary by a year or two. It was first used in the book Generations (1991) by William Strauss and Neil Howe, who felt it was an appropriate name for the first generation to reach adulthood in the new millennium.

There has also been a slight increase in the proportion of 25- to 34-year-olds who are still living with their parents – this is the case for 14% of millennials UK-wide. Older generations were more likely to leave school at an earlier age, sometimes with no qualifications – something which is now very rare. Pew Research Center is not the first to draw an analytical line between Millennials and the generation to follow them, and many have offered well-reasoned arguments for drawing that line a few years earlier or later than where we have. Perhaps, as more data are collected over the years, a clear, singular delineation will emerge. But more than likely the historical, technological, behavioral and attitudinal data will show more of a continuum across generations than a threshold. This is a reminder that generations themselves are inherently diverse and complex groups, not simple caricatures.

“It’s been a steady reversal,” said study co-author Joanna Pepin, a doctoral candidate in sociology at the University of Maryland. They are generally regarded as being more open-minded, and more supportive of gay rights and equal rights for minorities. Other positives adjectives to describe them include confident, self-expressive, liberal, upbeat and receptive to new ideas and ways of living. The Millennial Generation is also known as Generation Y, because it comes after Generation X — those people between the early 1960s and the 1980s.

Some people like the flexibility offered by a zero-hours contract, under which workers are not obliged to actually accept any work offered. But others see them as being exploitative and lacking in job and income security. Much has been made of zero-hours contracts, a form of employment which has grown more common over the past decade; between 2003 and 2005 they sat at 0.4% of all contracts, UK-wide, but increased to 2.8% by the end of 2016. Millennials in their 20s are 25% more likely to work part-time than members of Generation X were when they were at the same age. During their 20s, they are projected to earn £8,000 less than their GenX equivalents. For those aged 35 to 64, the same figures are just over 77% employed, 2.9% unemployed, and 20.6% inactive.

Canadian millennials

This comfort with social media means they are good at self-promotion and fostering connections through online media. But this approach often results in an issue when comparing themselves to peers. Millennials are sometimes frustrated by the grass seeming greener on the other side of the fence. That impression may be due to people’s image crafting, which emphasizes their good qualities and exciting parts of their lives. Some adaptations in the workplace have come about from employers accommodating Millennials.

These millennial performers include Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Drake, Cardi B, and Lady Gaga. Millennial Issa Rae loosely adapted her YouTube series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl (2011–13) into the hit HBO show Insecure (2016–21), which follows two Black women living in Los Angeles. Comedy Central’s Broad City (2014–19), which recounts the misadventures of two hapless millennial women, was also picked up this way; it came from Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson’s YouTube series (2010–11) of the same name. Baby boomers are the generation of people born after World War II when the birth rate spiked. Generation Alpha is the first generation of kids who will never know a time when social media didn’t exist, and they are far more tech-savvy than any generation previously, which is a powerful tool that can change humanity in myriad positive ways. “Some millennial parents, who were ‘helicoptered over’ in their youth, are taking on a freer approach to parenting, allowing their children to explore and create without constant structure or supervision.”

Now is the time to extend your brand of great service beyond the branch. But the generations don’t tell the whole story and their behaviors can be hard to lock down. Before we dive into each generation, remember that the exact years born are in dispute, because there are no comparably definitive thresholds by which the later generations (after Boomers) are defined. But this should give you a general range to help identify what generation you belong in. Whatever terminology or grouping you use, the goal is to reach people with marketing messages relevant to their phase of life. In short, no matter how many letters get added to the alphabet soup, the most important thing you can do is seek to understand the soup du jour for the type of consumer you want to attract.

The term “Millennial” has become the popular way to reference both segments of Gen Y (more on Y.1 and Y.2 below). And coming up last but not least is Generation Alpha, the name given by social analyst Mark McCrindle to the youngest children on the planet. By the year 2025 there will be nearly 2 billion members of Generation Alpha across the globe.

Generation Y is the first generation in recorded history which is projected to be worse off than those which came before. These are short surveys that can be sent frequently to check what your employees think about an issue quickly. The survey comprises fewer questions (not more than 10) to get the information quickly. These can be administered at regular intervals (monthly/weekly/quarterly). A subset of the Boomers, Generation Jones, was born in the later years of the Baby Boom, from 1954 to 1964.

Millennials are also getting married and having children later in life. Yet this seems to be the case in many countries that were not affected by the Great Recession. In China, for example, millennials joined the workforce when the country’s economy was soaring. And, while they have not necessarily delayed purchasing a house, as their counterparts in the Western world have done (some 70 percent of millennials in China own their own homes), they are holding off on other significant milestones. In 2019 the average age of first marriage in China was 27 for men and 25 for women, whereas in 1982 the average age was 23 for men while half of women were married by age 22.
